Bone density screening helps identify early signs of osteoporosis or bone loss before symptoms arise. If you’ve experienced irregular periods or hormonal changes or have a family history of fractures, this test gives clarity and helps with proactive measures. At Femme Med and Spa, you’re in a safe space—free to ask questions and share anything without judgment.
Identify Possible Bone Loss
Before Symptoms Arise
Bone density screening measures the strength and thickness of your bones. It’s most commonly done using a DEXA scan, which safely uses low-dose X-rays to assess areas like your hips and spine. This test helps detect bone loss early, even before fractures occur. At Femme Med and Spa, we recommend bone density screening if you’re postmenopausal, have a family history of osteoporosis, or notice changes like back pain or posture.
Bone Density Screening Can Identify
- Early signs of osteoporosis before symptoms develop
- Thinning bones that may lead to future fractures
- Changes in bone strength over time
- Bone loss related to menopause or aging
- Effects of certain medications on bone health
- Risk factors for fractures in the hips, spine, or wrists
How Does Bone Density Screening Work?
During your screening, you’ll lie comfortably on a table while a small device scans areas like your hips and lower spine. The process is quick, painless, and doesn’t require any injections or special preparation.
It uses a low-dose X-ray to measure how much calcium and other minerals are in your bones. The results help your provider understand your risk for fractures and determine if treatment is needed.
Advantages of Proactive Bone Density Screening:
- Catching bone loss early before symptoms appear
- Reducing your risk of unexpected fractures
- Tracking changes in bone health over time
- Guiding decisions on hormone therapy or supplements
- Supporting a personalized treatment plan
- Increasing awareness of your overall health
Who Needs Bone Density Screening?
You may need bone density screening if you’re postmenopausal, have a family history of osteoporosis, or notice physical changes like a stooped posture or unexplained back pain. During your consultation, your provider will review your medical history, symptoms, and lifestyle factors. If screening is recommended, we’ll explain the process and use your results to create a personalized treatment plan that fits your needs and supports your long-term health.
Generally speaking, you may need bone density screening if:
- You are a woman over age 65
- You are postmenopausal and under 65 with risk factors
- You’ve experienced a fracture after age 50
- You have a family history of osteoporosis
- You’ve lost height or have changes in posture
- You take medications like steroids or anti-seizure drugs
- You have low body weight or a history of eating disorders
- You have a condition like rheumatoid arthritis or thyroid disease
How Often Should I Get Screened?
This depends on your risk factors and current bone health. If your results are normal and you don’t have additional risks, you may only need a bone density scan every 5 to 10 years. If you have osteopenia (low bone mass), osteoporosis, or other risk factors, your provider may recommend testing every 1 to 2 years to monitor changes and guide treatment.
What Do the Results Mean?
Your results will include a T-score, which compares your bone density to a healthy young adult. A T-score above -1 is considered normal, a T-score between -1 and -2.5 suggests low bone mass (osteopenia).
A T-score of -2.5 or lower indicates osteoporosis. Your provider will explain what your score means and what next steps may be helpful.
